NATURE CONSERVATION SOCIETY
This is a charitable N.G.O and supports and implements conservation projects, environmental
awareness projects and campaigns and provides assistance to local communities, school children
through films and slide shows, lectures and distribution of nests of birds encoraging them in adoption
of birds’ nests and feed etc.
What is the importance of wildlife to the environment?
To maintain ecological ‘balance of nature’ and maintain food chain and nature cycles.
It has economic value. Many trees and plants provide useful substances like timber, paper, gums,
medicine etc. They also have wide applications in Ayurveda and other branches of medicine. Wild
animal products which are prohibited are like ivory, musk, snake venom, fur, bones, gallbladder and
antlers etc.
Most important contribution of wild life for human progress is availability of large gene pool for the
scientists to carry breeding programmes in agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery.
Wild life provides aesthetic value to man.
Wild life of a country is its cultural asset.

Menace of stray cattle and dogs.

About
Nature Conservation Society, Punjab was established in the year 2010 by Gurmit Singh I.F.S
Retd.Dy Chief Wildlife Warden,Punjab and Balbir Singh Gurm retired as Assistant Director
fromWildlife Crime control Bureau(W.C.C.B) Government of India, Ministry of Environment &
Forests, New Delhi earlier known as Wildlife Preservation. Both the officers were involved in Nature
conservation programmes from the last 39 years. Focusing on Nature conservation, Wildlife and
Forest and natural resources.
President of Society
Gurmit Singh is an I.F.S. officer from Punjab state who retired as Deputy chief wildlife warden in
Punjab state in the year 2010 after completing 39 years of service in wildlife conservation, He has
taken the responsibility of president of the society. His love for wildlife and nature conservation made
him dedicated in his carrier in conservation. He is M.Sc in zoology from Bombay university (through
Bombay natural History society, Bombay) The officer is trained in wildlife management. He passed
Diploma in Wildlife management from Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradune during the year 1980-81.
He remained in touch with educational institutes. He is on the panel of number of schools in
Chandigarh. He also Provides a free on line service for conservation. He is also opted as one of the
member of Punjab state wildlife Board by chief Minister of Punjab.
General Secretary
B .S.Gurm is M.Sc.Zoology and has been retired as Assistant Director from Wildlife Crime control
Bureau(W.C.C.B) Government of India, Ministry of Environment &Forests, New Delhi earlier known
as Wildlife Preservation. He has served in wildlife Preservation for more than 33 Years and also
worked in Zoological Survey of India for four years as Scientific Assistant. He is General Secretary of
the Society. During the tenure of his service he has undergone the following prestigious trainings
related to Wildlife Management, Law enforcement and CITES from US Fish and Wildlife Service
USA.
1. International Wildlife Law Enforcement Training from US Fish and Wildlife Service USA.
2. Enforcement Training from CITES Management Authority of India New Delhi.
3. Training in Management Strategies for Conservation Cultivation and Utilization of Medicinal Plants
organized by IIFM Bhopal.
4. Leadership Course on Environmental Awareness and Wildlife Conservation from Zoologocal
Survey of India Kolkata
Activities
Awareness and Educational Activities
Society is planning to conduct educational awareness lectures in educational Institutes so that our
children can learn conservation of our natural resources.Punjab Government have given to give free
lecture on Nature Conservation.
Quarterly News Letter of the Society
Nature Conservation Society, Punjab is publishing a quarterly News letter of the society highlighting
various activities of Nature conservation and news highlighting wildlife crimes in state as well as in
India and highlighting the punishment awarded to poachers ,m so that moral of those who are
working for Nature Conservation shall always remain in high spirit.
